This Makes Me Want to Quit Smoking. And I Don’t Even Smoke!

Added on by jessica klepac.

I’m not a smoker, but as a designer I can appreciate brilliant marketing. So I had to grab “The Last Pack” when I was in a CVS pharmacy last weekend.

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that as of September 1, you can no longer buy cigarettes at CVS. And in addition to removing cigarettes from its shelves, the company adopted a new name – CVS Health. I read the news and saw the story online, but until I walked into a CVS I did not realize the extent to which the company embraced the “health” part of its new name. CVS quit cigarettes and is trying to help customers quit, too, with a pretty creative campaign.

As soon as I walked into the store I was greeted by signs that read, “Ready To Quit?” and “Let’s Quit Together.” After quickly grabbing the few items I needed, I stood in line and took in the whole store. Everywhere I turned, CVS was sending me a message, letting me know they had my back if I was ready to quit smoking. Again, not a smoker, but it sure did impress me.

Once I got to the counter, a little display caught my eye.  At first glance it looked like a traditional cigarette display. But as I got closer, I noticed the display was filled with cigarette-size boxes that said “The Last Pack.” I was so curious what was in the box that I snatched one up! Was it really the last pack of cigarettes? Nicotine patches? A prescription?

I opened it when I got home, and what I found blew me away. Inside the little cigarette box was a tobacco quit-kit, complete with the following:

  •  “Ready to Quit?” booklet with professional advice
  • “It Pays to Quit” card showing what your finances will look like after you stop buying cigarettes
  • “#OneGoodReason” card on how to share the one good reason you’re quitting
  • Coupon for a free 4x6 print to remind yourself of the #OneGoodReason
  • Coupon to save $5 with any “Stop Smoking Aids”
  • “Dozen Distractions” booklet with games like sudoku and crossword puzzles
  • “Proud to be a Quitter” sticker to show off your to your buddies

At this point, I was ready to make up a story of my own and share it on social media just so I could be a part of the movement!

As a designer who works with healthcare clients, seeing a successful campaign like this really inspires me to dig deeper and think bigger in my daily work. I don’t want my designs to just look good; I want to creatively guide people to make better decisions about their life and health.

CVS Health proved a thoughtful promotion campaign can make a statement and reinforce the brand in a bold way.

What campaigns have jumped out at you and made you want to get involved?

You are open to change for the better.

Have you ever been to a wedding that felt like a super-fun-colorful-crazy-beach party? Well, my friend Jen just had her wedding this past December that was just that and more! An awesome, classy, beach-style celebration in Naples, Florida.

Jen is very much the type of person to go all out to make sure everyone has a good time. So she wanted to set the "fun" tone from the very beginning and really cater to her guests. She never wanted frilly, fancy invitations, but something that was more true to her and her fiancé's personality. Something unique, fun, colorful and bold. So we came up something that caught everyone's eye.

People got their first taste of what the wedding would be like with the save the date, and then the invitation booklet set came soon after. For the ceremony itself we created greeting cards for the guests when they arrived to their hotel room, reception menus, favor cards, shiny napkins and custom wine glass escort cards. And finally matching thank you notes. See the finished results and beautiful photos below.

What more could you ask for in a wedding? The sunshine, the beach, a big party, your family and friends, and a beautiful couple pledging their love to each other. A good recipe for a wonderful event and a lifetime full of happiness!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas...

It's getting close to Thanksgiving, but I'm already thinking about Christmastime! This year my husband and I are traveling across the country (by car with our dog in the back seat ... eek!) to see our families for the holidays. It's been years since we've been back to Texas together and we have a little niece due any day now, so we're especially excited for this trip! The weather here in New York is already getting frigidly cold! Heavy coats, scarves and gloves are already needed... and this Texan still isn't used to it after 4 winters. So hopefully we'll get a little break from all that when we travel south!

During the last week in November every year, I always get this heart-warming, ooey-gooey, reminiscent feeling about my life. As I hope most Americans do, I reflect and realize how blessed I am. Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for those close to you and for the life God has given you. And why not do that over a giant stuffed turkey? Everyone likes to chow down with their favorite people! It's the perfect American holiday.

Over the years I've gotten to know so many people by simply designing for them.  There have been lots of weddings, graduations, birthdays, new babies, parties... and I've gotten to be a part of them all in a small way. I truly am thankful for this work I get to do in celebrating people and their life events. And of course, during this time of year, I especially enjoy doing Christmas cards! I recently went through some old files and dug up a few of my favorites from over the years.  While I do like the designs, it's really the families in these photos that make the cards special. And I hope that's how the receipients of all these cards felt when opening them. A feeling of love and thankfulness.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and be thankful for those around you!

Let's get this party started already

More and more people nowadays are having beautiful destination weddings on the beach. As mentioned before, if I had the chance to do it all over again, I'd pick a beach wedding too!  So much to my excitement, a friend recently approached me to help her with some beach-party-themed save the dates.

Since the save the date is the first thing that people see of all your wedding papery, we went back and forth on what to do! You gotta set the tone for the whole wedding right away! She's a very fun, adventurous person, so there will be no formal-sit-down anything at this wedding. More like a big party on the beach. So below are the two designs we came up with based on the style and personality of the couple.  She really loved both, but ultimately picked the one on the right! Who wouldn't want to go to that beach party?

Stay tuned for this bride's exciting wedding invitation / destination guide!
